The Rotary Club of Abuja in collaboration with the Melroy Foundation has called for a renewed vigour in our efforts to promote peace in Nigeria.
The Peace Ambassador, Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), Amb. Roy-Stanley Nwafor said this in a statement marking the International Day of Peace with the theme “recovering better for a sustainable and equitable world” adding that it’s high time we forge a common front to rescue Nigeria from the shackles of nepotism, ethnicity, religious bigotry and other unhealthy behaviours that’s capable of disrupting the peace of the nation.
Nwafor who is also an Ambassador Rotarian Action Group for Peace said the International Day of Peace 2021 presents a veritable opportunity to thinker with peacebuilding actors like the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Professor Dickson Akoh and Partner, World Taekwondo, and other NGOs in the peacebuilding to promote the 8 pillars of positive peace in order of taxonomy and chat a way forward.
He commended government efforts in ensuring peaceful coexistence and called for a more functioning and responsive government, sound business environment, equitable distribution of resources, acceptance of the right of others, freedom of information and general human capital development to better the livelihood of all Nigerians.
Nwafor said as a demonstration of peace building, the club in conjunction with other peace builders strategically planted 8 palm trees to signify the 8 pillars of positive peace and also flagged off mini project at the Nigeria’s unity fountain like painting of the one people one nation statue, installation of mobile toilet and provision of power for the water fountain and lightnings following the vandalization and dilapidation of the power plant.
