England face the prospect of losing out on hosting the 2030 World Cup following the shameful scenes  surrounding the Euro 2020 final, with Spain and Portugal in line to profit

The violence, poor security, fan invasion of the pitch, several ticketless fans and racist abuse of players had led to them losing their favourites tag in the hope of securing the 2030 World Cup hosting rights.

There has been plenty of interest in hosting the 2030 World Cup, which will mark 100 years since the first World Cup.

The main interest is from South America, who have a joint bid from Uruguay (the first World Cup hosts), Argentina, Chile and Paraguay, the two Iberian nations Spain and Portugal, Morocco and a Great Britain and Ireland bid.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson backed a UK and Ireland World Cup bid earlier this year, but this may hit the rocks considering the avalanche of abuse and violence that trailed the Euro final which saw Italy emerging champions.

A report in The Telegraph this week suggested the Spanish and Portuguese bid is now the frontrunner.

After the final, The Mirror reported some harrowing events including such as ‘a steward threatened with a knife, a woman fan seriously sexually assaulted and a tearful schoolboy traumatised.’

Footage appeared after the match, showing English fans attacking their Italian counterparts as bars, pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area shut down to calm matters.

England hosted eight games at Wembley, including six England matches as well as Italy’s clashes with Austria and Spain in the Round of 16 and semi-final respectively.

The bidding process is set to be launched in the second quarter of 2022 and the host will be chosen at the 74th FIFA Congress in 2024, six years ahead of the World Cup.
