Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, has commissioned and handed over the newly completed Corps’ Members’ Lodge and Viewing Centre constructed by the ministry in Koroma Tai Community, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In a statement made available by Mrs. Deworitshe Patricia, Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Akpabio while handing over the project, urged the Koroma Tai Community to be dedicated to the protection and maintenance of the property to complement government efforts.

Sen. Akpabio, represented by Ephraim Brigid, a Management Staff in the Housing and Urban Development Department of the ministry, described the Corpers Lodge and Viewing Centre as one of the gains and achievements recorded under the ‘change agenda’ of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He informed that the Niger Delta region should expect more intervention projects as soon as the 2022 appropriation bill is passed. According to him, “this commissioning is only the beginning, the Ministry is passionately seeking better and faster ways of delivering on its Mandate. We have noted and learned many lessons from the development of this project and will factor this into future projects”.

Chairman of Tai LGA, Friday Mbakpone reacting, noted that corps members play important roles in the community, school and offices, just as he commended the Niger Delta ministry for providing comfort to the youth.

In a related development, Akpabio while commissioning the Community Primary School, Tombia in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, stated that a modern economy is knowledge-driven, thus, the Niger Delta region needs to be carried along, with reference to findings in the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report which stated that poverty is directly connected to poor quality of education and improvement in the quality of education can reduce poverty to as much as 30 percent.

The Minister, who was represented by Sabo Adamu, Director, Community Development and Education (CDE) Department, of the ministry, posited that the ministry serves as a primary vehicle to drive the federal government’s intervention to fast-track socio-economic development in the Niger Delta region.

He reiterated that the ministry has made considerable progress in the area of infrastructure development, environmental remediation, human capital development, and maintenance of peace and security for sustainable development.
