Following the aftermath of the supreme court judgment in the Ondo State governorship election petition which has unveiled the legal frailty of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC’s chances in the 2023 general elections, some youths under the auspices of Progressive Youth Movement, PYM, have demanded immediate dissolution of the governor Mai Mala Buni-led caretaker committee
A dissecting judgment of three justices of the supreme court against four had on Wednesday held the APC erred and contravenes section 183 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) in allowing a sitting governor to sit as its national chairman.
Addressing a press conference Thursday at the national secretariat of APC, the leader of the group, Princess Zahra Mustapha Audu, said given the current reality that has exposed the illegitimacy of the national caretaker committee led by Buni, the youths could no longer fold their arms and watch the party go down the pit.
Princess Audu stressed that it has become imperative and as a matter of necessity for the Board of Trustees, BOT, of the party to meet and take drastic decisions to salvage the party from total humiliation.
She insisted there are capable hands in the party that can handle the affairs of the party rather than burdening a sitting governor who has more critical State issues to attend to with the party’s loads of problems.
“We are not prepared to take any chances anymore. We cannot keep playing this game with our party, with our future, with our lives. Enough is enough. We believe that within the APC, we have capable hands, former leaders regardless of generational differences at this point in time who can manage the affairs of our party. Why must it be one individual or the other?
At this point in time, I think it is a bit selfish for us to expect a sitting governor who has several critical issues to manage in his state considering the fact that we have a lot of insecurity in the country, we expect him to also man a party like the APC. I do not think we are being fair to him. Gov. Buni is doing his best, but as a party we are unfair. We have people who are not doing anything who can do handle this party and protect it.
We should not rush and go ahead with the Congresses or convention or whatever else is going on. Let us follow the law because our party is not one that will muscle or bribe the judiciary. We should not expect favors from the judiciary if we do not do the needful. So, it is for that reason that we are asking the entire Caretaker Committee to immediately step down and put people that can carry this party forward.
Based on some legal advice that I received this morning, I was informed that our BOT needs to urgently set to take a critical decision that will rescue our party, and that’s what we are calling for.
I demand that until we understand what is going on, that all pending activities be put on hold. We do not have money to waste, we cannot afford to hold congresses twice. So we demand that until we are sure that everything we are doing is legally above board, we should put it on hold.
He said, “It was a near miss for us yesterday, and it spells doom for us. The danger is still not completely averted. For four out of seven justices of the supreme court to dismiss the petitioner’s claim simply because Mai Mala Buni was not joined in the suit spells doom for the party. It means if anybody goes to court subsequently and joins the national chairman in the suit, then the party will collapse.
We are here as concerned youths of the party, we don’t want to see our party exposed to further danger. The situation at present calls to question the legitimacy of the caretaker committee, and that means any action was taken by the committee henceforth will be deemed null and void. The NEC of the party should meet urgently and take drastic decisions to save the party.
In his submission, Prince Mustapha Audubon said, “We call on the NEC to immediately dissolve the caretaker committee. When a senator is removed from office, he is asked to return all the money that has been given to him. Therefore, we call for the caretaker committee to return all the money it has spent since assuming office and that there must be an immediate stop to the withdrawal of any money by the committee from the party’s purse.”
