The American woman convicted with her boyfriend for the sadistic murder of her mother in 2014 in Bali is set for an early release from prison, her lawyer told media outlets this week.
Heather Mack, who was 19 years old and pregnant at the time of the crime, was handed a 10-year prison term for assisting in the murder in 2015, while her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the premeditated murder of Sheila von Wiese Mack.
Schaefer, who was 21, had beaten von Wiese Mack to death with a fruit bowl during a blazing row at the five-star St. Regis resort in Bali, while the daughter hid in the bathroom. The couple then stuffed her battered body in a suitcase and abandoned it in a taxi before fleeing.
The case sent shockwaves throughout one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations.
Yesterday, Mack’s lawyer Yulius Benyamin Seran told media outlets that she will conclude her prison sentence this coming October, without specifying an exact date. Authorities rewarded Mack for good behavior by cutting off three years of her prison term, Yulius said.
Now 25 years old, Mack has reportedly filed for a stay permit for her daughter to remain in Indonesia. Her six-year-old daughter is being raised at a foster home in Bali, according to reports. Mack, on the other hand, would face deportation back to the United States following her release, Yulius said.
“She hopes that her daughter will not be deported with her, as she does not know anything about the ongoing situation, or what will happen after she returns to the US … She does not want her daughter to be hounded by the media, whether local, national, or international,” Yulius said, as quoted by IDN Times.
