After weeks of relatively few cases, the August 23 advisory from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) shows a very sharp rise in the number of new Covid-19 cases among Filipinos abroad: 946 last week, compared to 36 reported on August 16 and 89 on August 9. This represents an increase of over 2500% over the previous week.
This brings the total number of people undergoing treatment to 8,538. There were also 205 new recoveries last week, while there were 35 fatalities among Filipinos abroad.
While the DFA did not release any specifics, their advisory also noted that Europe was the only region not to have any new cases. The highest number of new cases came from the Middle East and Africa, while the Asia-Pacific region had the highest number of deaths and recoveries.
