Novak Djokovic will see a friendly face standing across from him in the round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympic Games, with Alejandro Davidovich, a player he sometimes trains with, set to face him in the next round.

Davidovich cut a frustrated figure after defeating John Millman 4-6, 6-7 (4) and 6-3 in 2 hours and 48 minutes, but he was furious he hadn’t closed the second set when he had the opportunity to do so.

Despite this setback, the Spaniard easily progressed through to a face-off with Djokovic, which he is looking forward to.

“Djokovic, I like him, we like each other, we have seen each other on the circuit, but in his quarantine he came to my brother’s house in Marbella and we trained a couple of times,” Davidovich explained.

“Now that I can face him, he can be beaten too.

“It’s clear that he is chasing a gold meal and the US Open, but it won’t be easy for him to handle that pressure.”

The Spaniard rather uniquely finished the match against Millman with one white sock and one black sock, which has been his good-luck charm in tournaments away from Wimbledon.

“It has been something I’ve done for a long time, I could ask you why you wear two socks the same?” he continued.

“I was thinking of wearing one red and one yellow here, but they didn’t reach me.

“They won’t let me do this at Wimbledon.”
