The Community Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged to support national efforts to rid the sub-region of cybercrime.
The Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament Rt Hon Sidie Mohamed Tunis made this pledge at the closing of the meeting of the Joint Committees on Political Affairs, Peace, Security and APRM/ Legal Affairs and Human Rights/ Telecommunications and Information Technology, at Winneba, Ghana.
He said: “Permit me, at this moment, to give the assurance that the ECOWAS Parliament, working with all stakeholders, will endeavor to ensure that the growing threats and risks facing global cyberspace and digital networks, information systems, and data in our region, are kept at bay.
“These threats and risks are part and parcel of development; and we, as a Parliament, need to ensure that we support national cybersecurity and anti-cybercrime organizations, critical digital services and infrastructure, as well as regional mutual assistance and international cooperation. It is by doing so that we can take the quantum leap necessary for achieving our objectives”.
He noted that the meeting, under the theme of “The role of Telecommunications and Information Technology in achieving Regional Development, Peace and Security and Human Rights” has been very informative and engaging.
Expressing gratitude to all the experts for the highly educative and enlightening presentations, the Speaker said the meeting of the Joint Committee was characterized by several presentations from resource persons and experts.
Hon. Tunis said that the experts have captured all the concerns and provided measures to ensure that all issues are resolved.
He also added that they identified the relevant intervention and mechanism, hence enabling Parliament to make an efficient contribution in ensuring that recommendations are made to Plenary at the next session.
“I am glad to observe that the deliberations that followed were very enriching. They provided important insights that are expected to lead to forward-thinking actions and put us in an informed position to address issues in achieving regional development, as well as the progression of peace, security, and human rights. I, therefore, wish to commend my colleagues, Members of Parliament, for the countless hours of hard work,” he said.
He concluded that the meeting highlighted the potentiality of TIT in the development of the ECOWAS Region particularly in areas of peace and security and fundamental Human Rights.
