MaguZainab Abiola, one of the lawyers on the team of the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC), Ibrahim Magu has condemned the operations of the presidential panel investigating Magu’s activities during his time as the head of the anti-corruption agency.

According to Abiola, the head of the investigative panel, Justice Ayo Salami is operating like an emperor and not following any established legal procedures.

She also alleged that the panel has no case against Magu but is trying to pin unfounded allegations against him.

She made her claims in an interview with The Cable after she was walked out of the panel’s sitting on Monday, when as earlier reported by Naija News, Justice Salami declared that only one lawyer would be allowed to represent Magu at the panel’s sitting.

Abiola disclosed that one of the lawyers, whom she identified as Fatimah was bundled by DSS officials acting on the instructions of Justice Salami and put in a prison cell within the Aso Rock Villa.

Describing the encounter, she raised an alarm that Nigerians need to be worried if such can be happening within a democratic dispensation.

She said: “This is a democratic dispensation, you cannot bring military tactics, a Hitler’s Gestapo rule to this type of occasion,” she said.

“The panel was set up to be public. How then did it become a private sitting with Emperor Salami? He has become an emperor. He told me personally that there is only one chair for a lawyer. So I said, if there is only one chair, send for more chairs now.

“He called the DSS, they were fully armed. So, we left. But the other lady, Fatimah, was bundled and put in a cell, in a prison cell. So, there is a prison in the presidential villa? Nigerians should worry for themselves.”

Naija News reports President Muhammadu Buhari had set up the Justice Ayo Salami panel to probe corruption allegations levelled against Ibrahim Magu as the head of the EFCC.
