Jakarta’s dining scene is about to get all the merrier with English chef Tom Aikens’ eponymous restaurant at the newly-opened five-star hotel The Langham Jakarta in the SCBD area.
Offering a classic European dining experience and a bar, Tom’s patrons can enjoy various British and French-influenced dishes with spectacular views of the capital’s skyline from The Langham’s 62nd floor.
The menu is personally curated by Aikens himself, who is known for his impressive feat of having been awarded two Michelin stars at the age of 26. The Norwich-born chef, restaurateur, and media personality is the youngest British chef to have garnered that recognition.
“At Tom’s, the produce is the hero. We are celebrating flavours and harmonizing taste and texture, working with the world’s best meat, imported or dry-aged to perfection in-house, along with poultry and seasonal seafood prepared and cooked on the bone, which is a superior method of cooking,” Aikens said in a release.
The restaurant will be helmed by executive sous chef Giles Langford, who was trained by Aikens. Langford, who initially studied agriculture and horticulture before shifting to gastronomy, will also create a rooftop eco-garden at the hotel to grow herbs that will be solely used at Tom’s.
At the restaurant, there will be personalized culinary service for guests, presented in highly styled à la carte Gueridon service — in which meat carvings, burrata, and various desserts are prepared in a trolley in front of guests. Meanwhile, beverages such as champagnes and cocktails will be presented and prepared for guests at the table.
A lively cooking process, courtesy of the restaurant’s Marrone open kitchen, is set to be part of the dining experience at Tom’s. There’s also a mezzanine lounge overlooking the restaurant with its own dedicated bar menu, consisting of light bites and handcrafted cocktails. There’s a bar connected to this lounge, which claims to have the largest and most varied whiskey selections in Jakarta.
Gaylord Lamy, The Langham Jakarta’s general manager, said that they are looking forward to unveiling Tom’s after years of meticulous planning and working closely with Aikens’ team to craft, and later present, the culinary vision into reality.
“Set to elevate dining experiences in Jakarta, Tom’s is spacious yet intimate, and will be one of the most fascinating gastronomic ventures and social gathering places when it opens,” Lamy said.
The Langham Jakarta, which opened its doors to the public today, also features other restaurants and bars, such as the hotel’s signature Chinese restaurant T’ang Court, Alice brasserie where you can enjoy afternoon tea, and The Langham Club Lounge.
