Sol Campbell

Arsenal hero, Sol Campbell, has offered to return to the club and teach their struggling defenders some ‘tricks of the trade’ in a bid to improve their fortunes.

The Gunners have started the Premier League season with three straight defeats and sit bottom of the table after failing to score a goal while conceding nine.

Manager Mikel Arteta is struggling and under pressure, but Campbell believes he can help him out and offer a few ‘nuggets of information to the Arsenal backline, which is finding it extremely tough going in the Premier League at the moment.

‘I’d love to go there & help them out, I would,’ Campbell told talkSPORT. ‘There is a serious problem there & I’m happy to help, even if it’s a couple of days a week

‘The tricks of the trade and little things, there is a blind spot there and I’d help them out all day long. It’s been happening a lot and it doesn’t matter who plays at the back, it seems to be the same type of occurrences

‘Its a young team, there’s great footballers but I think they just need the know-how, tricks of the trade, picking up little things, little nuggets of information that someone like me or someone else can give over to them. Those little details will make the difference.’

Campbell made 197 appearances for Arsenal from 2001-06, winning the Premier League twice and FA Cup three times, before returning in January 2010 for a short spell of 14 matches.

Since retiring from playing he has had short spells in management at Macclesfield Town and Southend United.

Arsenal’s most recent defeat was a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City last weekend, which Arteta admitted included some poor defending but also looked to blame the officials and said Granit Xhaka’s first-half red card did not help.

‘It’s really painful,’ he said after the loss. ‘A lot of incidents happened in the game to get to where we got.

‘I think we started the game really, really well and the first situation, they had the ball right near to our box. We didn’t defend the cross, we defended the run into the box really poorly and we are 1-0 down.

‘After that, we tried to go again, we created some situations, we conceded a second goal. For me, it’s a clear punch on Calum’s [Chambers] face, but the referee allows it to go and we are 2-0 down.

‘After the red card, obviously we had a mountain to climb.’
