Lewis Hamilton has declared himself fit for the second half of his title defence, shrugging off concerns that he is struggling with long Covid.

The world champion cut such an exhausted figure after his drive through the field in Hungary four weeks ago that he had to be helped on to the podium and later saw the Mercedes doctor, complaining of dizziness.

He attributed his plight to the after effects of catching Covid while on holiday in Dubai last December.

But ahead of Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton said: ‘I spent the summer break making sure I am in the best shape and now feel I am there for the second half of the season. It is not a concern for me.

‘I will continue to be focused on my health and work on getting stronger throughout the year.’

It is still to be finalised who will drive alongside Hamilton next year, though George Russell is favourite to win the seat over the incumbent Valtteri Bottas.

Russell said: ‘There have been discussions over the break. I trust Mercedes to look after my future, one way or the other.

‘Any driver wants to go against the best and Lewis is the greatest of all time.’

An announcement is expected in the first half of next month, around the Italian Grand Prix on September 12.
