The Ministry of Health announced late last night that it suspects the Omicron variant has been transmitted via a gym in the Bukit Timah Shopping Center.

Two individuals who visited the Anytime Fitness outlet there have tested preliminarily positive for the new coronavirus variant while the results for a third gym-goer are still pending. All three people visited the outlet between Wednesday and Friday and later developed a sore throat and fever before testing positive for COVID-19, according to a ministry release.

Gym staff and close contacts of the trio; an unemployed 21-year-old man, 18-year-old polytechnic student, and a 21-year-old culinary student; are under quarantine, while others who visited the gym in those three days last week have been issued “Health Risk Warnings,” requiring them to self-isolate and test themselves, the ministry added.

The gym remains open, according to an Instagram post this morning, and has gone through a round of cleaning. The gym noted that it was informed of the suspected spread of Omicron just yesterday, five days after the last of the three individuals visited the outlet.

“We will arrange for another round of deep cleaning as soon as possible to ensure the safety of our members,” it added.

Singapore has reported 71 Omicron cases so far, mostly among inbound travelers.

“Given its high transmissibility and spread to many parts of the world, we should expect to find more Omicron cases at our borders and also within our community,” the ministry said.
