The Rector, Prof. Enetimi Seiyaboh at the weekend said, he raised the Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area from a sorry state to an enviable height for the past five years.

The outgoing Rector made the assertion during a press briefing at the Liaison Office, Opolo in Yenagoa as part of the activities marking his send forth after completing his five-year tenure as head of the institution.

Prof. Seiyabo said when he assumed office as second substantive Rector of the school in 2016, the polytechnic was at its worst state every in terms of productivity and achieving the goals by the enabling Act establishing it with only three programmes on the ground, stating that the school now has 17 programmes running with full accreditation.

On assumption of office, the Rector recounted that the school had only sixty-eight students while internally generated revenue was almost non-existent with a low record of a paltry N2 million annually, thereby causing serious paucity of funds, hinting that the institution has registered over 3,000 students at a time under him.

Seiyaboh emphasized that the citadel of learning has produced nine PhD holders as against two that he met on the ground while thirty-two PhD students are undergoing research, adding that students from the institution are accepted for Post Graduate courses in universities all over the world.

He recalled that he met the institution when intervention from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and other interventions to the school had been blocked due to mismanagement of funds.

The Rector noted that his emergence saw to the reconsideration of TETFUND to assess various interventions, leading to the building of superstructures on the main campus.

He also recalled that he met a situation where staff were paid only 60% of their first grades, which led to industrial unrest, noting that he was able to clear all their backlog arrears through the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Assessment (PICA).

“All the shortfalls over the years, they calculated it from the inception of this polytechnic running into hundreds of millions of naira; all have been paid except for the last batch of PICA payment which has been properly documented. Some got millions of naira.

“As we speak, every staff in this polytechnic is receiving hundred per cent of their current promoted grades.

“The centre also created opportunities for reaching out to students in Ughelli and Ofagbe in Delta state, Uyo in Akwa Ibom state with outreaches in those locations,” he noted.

“We can now boast of five Higher National Diploma Programmes which its graduates being mobilized for National Youth Service and nine other National Diploma programmes in three schools with improved enrollment from 68 students to 2,500 full-time students and about 200 part-time students.”
