I get low-key excited when fast food chains launch limited items or bring back old favorites, and when KFC Indonesia did both, I just had to partake in the finger lickin’ goodness.

First, the Rosemary Butter Grilled Chicken, which was launched in mid-April. Unfortunately, right now it’s only available at KFC’s Kemang Raya and MT Haryono outlets in Tebet, South Jakarta, as well as the Cempaka Putih outlet in Central Jakarta due to “regulations regarding restrictions on the delivery of raw materials.” According to KFC, the grilled chicken will soon be available at 16 outlets in select cities.

For my lunch today, I ordered the Rosemary Butter Grilled Chicken at IDR22,000 a la carte through a food delivery app. The nearest KFC outlet with the available grilled chicken was the MT Haryono outlet, so I decided to order it with the Classic Combo. At IDR55,000, you’ll get a dinner roll, a corn cob, mashed potatoes with gravy, coleslaw, and I only had to add IDR2,000 to opt for the grilled chicken in lieu of the Original chicken.

The grilled chicken took me by surprise because it was bustling with flavor, though the skin wasn’t as crunchy as I’d have liked — but that may be due to the long delivery time between Tebet to my place. At least now I have a reliable option should the craving for aromatic grilled chicken arise; though I might consider eating at the restaurant next time.

Revisiting KFC’s Classic Menu

Aside from the Classic Combo, I also ordered from KFC’s Classic Menu lineup, which returned in early January. I had KFC Chicken Steak (IDR34,000) and Chicken Sliders Personal (IDR32,000) consisting of three rolls, which is also available in a larger serving (IDR53,500) with six rolls.

The Classic Menu was first introduced in May of last year, during which it was only available at KFC Taman Melawai, South Jakarta. With it, the chain aimed to introduce the younger generation to the original menu when KFC opened its first Indonesia restaurant in 1979. Coincidentally, I had a flash of nostalgia when I opened my Classic Combo box because I remember I had my chicken with sides that weren’t just rice wrapped in paper back in my childhood in the late ‘90s-early 2000s.

In general, the combo’s mashed potatoes turned out to be my favorite, as it wasn’t too mushy and the gravy had the right amount of savoriness. The coleslaw was too sweet and watery for my taste, while I would have preferred it if the cabbages came in bigger slices than small, mushy bits.

The Chicken Steak is basically two large chicken strips served with coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and gravy, though I am highly considering making another order in the future because the meal spiced up my usual KFC experience. The Chicken Sliders, on the other hand, was pretty underwhelming for me because it consisted only of bits of chicken strips sandwiched between dinner rolls with copious amounts of cheese and sweet sauce.

Other than the MT Haryono outlet, the Classic Menu lineup is available for dine-in, takeaway, and online delivery at a number of KFC outlets in Jakarta and West Java, including Pondok Indah Plaza and Basmar Plaza outlets in South Jakarta, Cikini and Salemba in Central Jakarta, and Daan Mogot in West Jakarta. The complete list of the outlets is available here.
