The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that the 2020 Ondo State governorship polls will go ahead as planned.
INEC National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, who was in Ondo State when the incident happened made this known while speaking about the fire accident.
It will be recalled as earlier reported by Naija News that more than 5000 card readers were destroyed in the fire incident which happened at the Ondo State Head Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) located in Akure, the Ondo State Capital.
However, Mr. Okoye noted while speaking with newsmen that despite the setback caused by the fire, the governorship election in the state which has been scheduled for October 10, 2020, would not be affected.
“This is just one state election. What we are going to do is to mop up smart card readers from other states and use them for the conduct of the election while investigating what happened,” he said.
“The cost of 5,141 smart card readers is so much, but we are not going to dwell on that now.
“What we are going to dwell on is to mop up smart card readers from other states that are not conducting elections and use them to conduct Ondo governorship election.
“We will dwell on other issues regarding the configuration of the card readers.”
