Jakarta is set to extend its enforcement of the odd-even traffic rule, though, starting Aug. 26, it will only be implemented on three major roads.

The rule, which only allows cars with license plates ending with an even number to be used on affected major roads on even calendar dates and vice-versa for odd dates, was suspended throughout most of the pandemic amid enforcement of mobility curbs that ostensibly shut most offices in the commercial heart of the city.

The rule made its return earlier this month to the usual eight major roads. As the Enforcement of Restrictions on Public Activities (PPKM) in Jakarta was downgraded to level 3 from level 4 this week, the Jakarta Metro Police has decided to also relax the odd-even rule starting tomorrow ahead of an expected return to normalcy on the capital’s roads.

“From Aug. 26 to Aug. 30, we are enforcing odd-even on three major roads, namely Sudirman, Thamrin, as well as Rasuna Said from the Mampang-Gatot Subroto intersection to the Imam Bonjol intersection,” said the traffic director at the Jakarta Metro Police, Sambodo Purnomo Yogo.

“These three zones are the main zones where offices in Jakarta are located.”

As has been the case with enforcement of the odd-even rule during PPKM, the traffic policy will be enforced from 6am to 8pm daily, including weekends. Fines are not applicable until further notice, as traffic police officers stationed at checkpoints have been ordered to turn away vehicles with the wrong license plates.

The police said the rule may be subject to further review or changes after Aug. 30.
