Khaosan Road faces closures after an outbreak of COVID-19 among party-goers there this past weekend.

Disease control workers were inspecting venues today after at least 10 people tested positive at a nightlife venue during the run-up to New Year’s Eve on Thursday and Friday, according to the head of the local business association.

The road was to undergo disinfection Tuesday afternoon, and the city may announce closures impacting the street. Other reports said at least 25 others were infected at a second Khaosan night club.

Sa-nga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khaosan Road Business Association, said that while nothing official had been announced, bars and restaurants may opt to close for peace of mind.

“We made sure our staff were tested regularly to ensure the safety of others,” Sa-nga told Coconuts today

Nonetheless, it’s understandable that some infections took place as there were many people celebrating there New Year’s Eve, he added.

Those infected were said to be isolated at home awaiting RT-PCR test results.

Although night clubs, bars, and similar entertainment venues are technically forbidden from operating until at least Jan. 16, those with restaurant licenses have been able to skirt the law.

Long empty due to the absence of the tourists drawn from around the world to its budget-friendly and once-chaotic scene, Khaosan saw a resurgence of activity last month as vaccinated locals and tourists began trickling back in.

Some vendors who had been hoping for a reversal of misfortune were understandably upset at the turn of events.
