Labour and Pro-Labour Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, yesterday launched a Campaign for Transformative Governance to end bad governance, corruption, and human insecurity.

The campaign is joint labour and pro-labour CSOs advocacy and platform to influence radical changes in government policies, processes and institutions at all levels towards achieving transformative governance.

The pro-labour CSOs include the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service and Recreational Service Employees, AUPCTRE, Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria, FIWON.

A statement signed by a co-convener of the campaign, Comrade Jaye Gaskiya said government at all levels have failed to meet the socio-economic and welfare needs of citizens, stressing that as the economic, social, and security outlook gets worse, the government has become more repressive and intolerant of views that challenge its actions and inactions.

It also stressed the importance of a robust and expansive civil space where the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association are guaranteed.

According to the statement, ‘‘it is unacceptable that a country with enormous resources would be ranked among the poorest in the world. Nigerians are among the least-secured people economically and physically. The facts and figures paint a very grim picture.’’

The three thematic areas of the campaign are ensuring accessible and effective public service delivery, political education of citizens for transformative governance, and promoting human security as a panacea to the endemic insecurity and ravaging poverty in the country.
