Pro-establishment lawmaker Regina Ip received rotten meat in the mail Wednesday, becoming the latest authority figure to be targeted by threatening letters in recent weeks.

The veteran politician told Stand News that she was sent a yellow envelope with a Taiwan postmark.

“At first, I didn’t know what it was,” Ip said, adding that the envelope felt mushy. “I didn’t know if it was charcoal or what, [so] I asked my Filipino helper to put on gloves and open it.”

Her helper cut open the package with scissors and found a small plastic bag with “something very gross,” Ip said.

She reported the mail to police. Upon investigation, officers told her that the substance in the envelope is suspected to be rotten meat.

Ip, who is running in the upcoming Legislative Council elections in December, is the latest in a string of authority figures to receive suspicious letters in the past month. At least four court judges were sent mail with meat-like substances in the last two weeks, according to the SCMP.

The judiciary said in a Wednesday statement that it would be enhancing security at court buildings.

A Telegram user by the name of “Hor Foon Hay”—who said he is in exile in Taiwan—claimed responsibility for the threatening letters, including the one to Ip, in a channel on the messaging app.

Separately, Nixie Lam, a member of pro-establishment party Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), told Stand News that she also received a suspicious letter made out to her home address. Lam is also contesting in next month’s elections.
