A giant red banner with a marriage proposal written on it was spotted flying across Hong Kong skies early Tuesday evening.

“LOUANNE LAM, I LOVE YOU! MARRY ME!” The all-caps text read.

The banner was seen at around 5 pm.

“Great view from my office,” one person wrote on Facebook.

It is unclear who Louanne Lam is, and whether she ended up happily ever after with her loved one who paid for the lavish splurge.

Online, few netizens saw the move as romantic, with most criticizing what they called senseless squandering of money that could be put to more meaningful uses.

Some also said the plain, red and white design of the banner resembles a security warning flag, and that if person behind the proposal was going to be spending so much money, they surely could have afforded a nicer-looking banner.

The proposal was arranged by Linkhere Yachts & Entertainment. The events management company posted a picture of the banner being flown above the Space Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui, and also congratulated the client for the “successful proposal.”

A quotation for the aerial proposal could not be found on Linkhere’s website, but the company’s 15-minute sightseeing tour costs HK$2,160 (US$277) per head, while a couple’s cruise with “intoxicating music” begins at HK$11,980 (US$1,540).

It’s not the first time that the city’s skies were graced by a loud marriage proposal. In 2015, a man made headlines after reportedly spending HK$150,000 (US$19,287) on an hour-long helicopter flight with the romantic banner.
