Denis Zakaria ‘prefers a transfer’ rather than signing a new deal at Borussia Monchengladbach, according to the club’s sporting director.
Manchester City and Arsenal are said to be interested in signing the defensive midfielder.
And Monchengladbach chief Max Eberl revealed the club are struggling to tie the 24-year-old down to a new deal amid talk of a Premier League move.
He said: ‘With Denis, we have been trying to extend his contract since October.
‘Denis and his management told us pretty clearly that they would prefer a transfer this summer.’
The 34-cap international played twice for Switzerland at Euro 2020, including in the quarter-final they lost on penalties against Spain, despite competing with captain Granit Xhaka and Atalanta’s Remo Freuler for a spot in the midfield double pivot.
Former Young Boys star Zakaria is tipped as one of the most promising players in Europe, and may leave Adi Hutter’s side given they finished eighth in the Bundesliga and therefore missed out on European qualification by a single point last season.
Pep Guardiola’s City and Arsenal have been credited with interest, although Arsenal’s lack of continental competition could count against them.
