Manchester United have confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo is returning to the club for a second spell in a huge Friday evening transfer announcement.
The Premier League club has reached an agreement with Juventus, subject to the agreement of personal terms, visa and a medical.
It comes after Ronaldo was linked with a move to Manchester City earlier in the day.
Attention will soon turn to welcoming the Portugal national back to Old Trafford where he made his name under Sir Alex Ferguson.
One question fans will soon be asking, if not already, is what shirt number the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and five-time Champions League winner will don in his second spell with Manchester United.
Ronaldo will not be able to reclaim his former No. 7 shirt, now occupied by Edinson Cavani.
Here are the options available to him, which are somewhat sparse given United’s large squad, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The Man Utd shirt numbers available to Cristiano Ronaldo
Last occupied by Chris Smalling between his arrival in 2010 until his transfer to Roma in 2020, with previous shirt holders including Ben Foster, David Bellion and Phil Neville. Legends like Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Paul Scholes also wore it on occasion.
Previously adorned by Ronaldo’s ex-team-mate Nemanja Vidic, and fellow wingers Jesper Blomqvist, David Beckham and Adnan Januzaj.
This jersey number is available due to Andreas Pereira’s season-long loan transfer to Flamengo, in Brazil.
Only six players have taken this jersey number, including Darren Fletcher, Timothy Fosu-Mensah – who joined Bayer Leverkusen in January – while Beckham and Scholes both previously wore it.
This could be a realistic option for Ronaldo, who wore a No. 28 shirt when he broke into club football at Sporting in 2002/03. He wore the shirt number in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United, in the game where he impressed so much that they signed him up.
The shirt has been vacated due to Facundo Pellistri’s loan move to Alaves.
Other options include numbers: 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38, 40 and upwards.
