Manchester United may switch to a new formation after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

The 4-2-3-1 formation has defined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s – almost three year – managerial reign at Manchester United.

While the United boss’ approach has undoubtedly helped United make significant progress on the pitch under his tutelage, its flaws became apparent long ago and the two words ‘double pivot’ have consequently crept into supporters’ vocabulary on matchday.

Paul Pogba is intrinsically linked with that conversation because, while the Frenchman has regularly proved he’s world-class when played further forward, Solskjaer has often used him in that deep midfield role, which essentially restricts his potential.

Solskjaer was considering switching to 4-3-3 over the summer and, although he’s persisted with the 4-2-3-1 formation this term, there’s reason to believe Cristiano Ronaldo’s imminent arrival might finally prove to be the catalyst for the Norwegian to implement change.

Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Amad, and Donny van de Beek represent United’s powerful attacking contingent and that’s without including the prolific Bruno Fernandes on that list.

So, Solskjaer’s trusted 4-2-3-1 might not play to United’s attacking strengths, but what formation could the United boss change to?
