“There is no other country in the world where chilling reports of regular mass abductions of innocent school children and teenagers tar public image, sanity, and conscience the way it is in Nigeria as if there is no government. After the Chibok girls mass abduction that sparked worldwide outrage, we have witnessed this horrendous development in many more states in the North”
The outpouring of emotion in Kaduna State between the released abducted Baptist School students and their parents and loved ones over the weekend is overwhelmingly understandable. These young ones are the future and the ultimate destiny of their parents, and the hope of tomorrow that the enemy of modernity and our collective future wanted to jeopardize. It is indeed shameful the most populous Black country in the world is unable to protect itself from bandits and decadelong insurgency, largely because it lacks the needed political will to do so. From Borno, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa States to FCT-Abuja, nowhere is safe for Nigerians to move freely without fear of being kidnapped or robbed.
This is not news anymore. It is a national and international scandal hanging on Nigeria. The negative effects of this development on our school system can only be imagined than easily explained. The Northeast is already on its knees. There are frenzied reviews of the incident and its implications on the already messed-up basic education system in Nigeria where about 13 million children are out of school roaming the streets, hawking, taking cattle for grazing on people’s farms, etc. We dare say that there is no other country in the world where chilling reports of regular mass abductions of innocent school children and teenagers tar public image, sanity, and conscience the way it is in Nigeria as if there is no government.
After the Chibok girl’s mass abduction that sparked worldwide outrage, we have witnessed this horrendous development in many more states in the North. Girl child education is one of Nigeria’s big basic education lacuna that international organizations have been pouring funds into to bridge the gap. From all indications, the benefits of the huge investment are being rolled back by series of abduction of students from their schools by bandits without any security intervention and demands for outrageous ransom. Note that, each time there are abductions, primary and secondary schools of affected states are shut down indefinitely.
Perhaps, what is most troubling in all of these from the reported to several other unreported cases is the fact that no premises of all the basic schools from North to South is secured despite all the mouth-watering promises by the government. Nobody secures our children in schools and nobody cares. There is absolutely nil presence of security agents to forestall any form of attack. The future of education in Nigeria, especially in the North, is extremely grim. This is one of the biggest problems that expose the weakness of this government that has continued to pick unprovoked quarrels with wise counsels from good men and women of this country who have the patriotic courage to tell it to its face that it is not getting things right. As a government gropes trying to find a solution to this knotty issue, we advise that security should be provided within and outside the premises of our public schools. It is a reproach or blemish for Nigeria to continue to experience criminal kidnapping of its citizens in schools, highways, farms, etc as if there is no government.
