The federal territories minister’s phone has been blowing up all night after he invited the country to ring him up for pothole complaints.

Shahidan Kassim gave out his phone number during yesterday’s sitting when he made a lofty promise of covering up potholes within 24 hours of a complaint but soon learned that he was unable to cope with the overwhelming response, urging citizens to drop him a text instead. The 70-year-old Arau Member of Parliament also gave out the numbers of his colleagues, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Jalaluddin Alias and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mahadi Che Ngah.

“I urge them to send me a text and I will act immediately,” he told reporters today. He did not reveal the number of calls he had received but noted that he has been unable to respond to all of them. Neither of the ministers immediately responded to requests for further comment.

Kuala Lumpur is notorious for its potholes and damaged roads, some of which have caused fatal traffic accidents.

While giving out the numbers in Parliament yesterday, Shahidan said: “We are available 24 hours [every day], citizens can call us at any time when they stumble upon potholes and damaged roads in KL.”

“We want our roads to be the best in Malaysia, and the world,” he added.

If you see a pothole, you can text him at +6019-454 1111, Jalaluddin at +6019-652 444, or Mahadi at +6016-206 8883.
