“Many experts and statesmen among who are former leaders, serving and retired military officers, democratic institutions, political leaders, diplomats, religious and traditional, have tried to proffer solutions to these problems; however, daily bloodshed and killings are still highly prevalent in many parts of the country because the government has become deaf to every reasonable solution”

Over the years, all the efforts of the federal government at solving the harrowing insecurity are riddled with suspicions and controversies. Just a few days ago, the country’s head of the Army was killed in a military air crash. Since the burial, very disturbing questions have been thrown up. There have been unanswered allegations of corruption in the funds made available for the purchase of weapons and prosecution of counterterrorism operations. The Nigerian military has been enmeshed in serial image meltdown as a result of the obvious politicization. One of the suggestions many informed persons have been offering to this government is a declaration of a state of emergency.

Unfortunately, the present administration would have none of that. Recently, a cleric added his call for the declaration of the state of emergency is from a cleric, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martins. According to him, “It is obvious that insecurity, apart from corruption, has become the single most serious problem that is facing our country today. “Many innocent persons are being kidnapped for ransom, many are being attacked in their homes and displaced with their property destroyed and normal life disrupted daily. Even policemen and their stations are being deliberately attacked with impunity. What this means is that the country is gradually drifting into a state of anarchy.

This, no doubt, portends grave danger for our collective wellbeing,” he said. In the statement signed by the Director of Social Communications, Anthony Godonu, the prelate lamented the incapacity of the government to tackle the problems. ” Efforts to rid the country of kidnappers and bandits should include constant dialogue between representatives of the security agencies and major stakeholders such as religious leaders, traditional rulers, leaders of ethnic groups, the civil society, and political parties,” the archbishop said. We cannot agree less with the cleric. The country’s security situation is getting worse by the day and has defied all the solutions held out by the Buhari administration. To stop these unending barbarous acts, tame insecurity, and arrest the national drift towards implosion, the most urgent thing to do now is to declare a statement of emergency.

Nigeria is one of the African and global flashpoints in terms of terrorism and violent conflicts. What is most disheartening is the fact that the government of Nigeria has clearly shown a lack of competence and political will to tackle the hydra-headed monster of insecurity. Many experts and statesmen among who are former leaders, serving and retired military officers, democratic institutions, political leaders, diplomats, religious and traditional, have tried to proffer solutions to these problems; however, daily bloodshed and killings are still highly prevalent in many parts of the country because the government has become deaf to every reasonable solution. We, therefore, urge this government too, as a matter of urgency, demonstrate courage and convincing political will to call for a critical stakeholders’ conference on national security with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem of insecurity in the country.
