Nigerian lady who met her ex at the age of 16 shares screenshot of age of consent in developed countries after followers said she was underage at that time
A Nigerian lady who met her ex at the age of 16, has shared screenshot of age of consent in developed countries after her Facebook followers said she was underaged at that time. Esiri Ukueku-Uduaghan revealed that she was in 200Level and studying law in the university at that time. Admitting that countries like Liberia, Burundi, Djibouti, Iraq, Haiti, and Nigeria placed their age of consent placed at 18 years, the Facebook user however stated that the Nigerian age of consent varies amongst states of the federation as not all states have domesticated the Child’s Rights Act. She added that at 200 Level in 1998-1999 in Delta state where she schooled and in Lagos state where she lived, she was an adult according to the prevailing laws of the states. According to her, people shouldn’t just take a look at a person and say to them “you were a child in …… year”, without understanding the law. Esiri wrote; I made a post earlier this evening, where I wrote that I met my ex at age 16.It doesn’t matter that I was in 200Level in the university studying Law.. a host of comments referred to me as a child who was underaged and ……Just by default..So I’ve decided to share this info on the age of consent in most advanced nations of the world with you.. just so you can take a step back and approach your opinion from a global perspective..You do not just see a 16 yr old.. tag him/ her underaged and start weaving grooming in your head. You are functioning from a mental space of limited orientation and that orientation is informing your stereotyping…The screenshot attached to this post shows that the U.K, many states of the U.S, Germany, Canada, France etc have their age of consent at 16 and below. You need to stop yourself from thinking like a Nigerian. When you are talking about social issues, try to understand what the position is in your country, but do not stop there.Juxtapose that position on a global scale so that you can arrive at an enlightened position.Someone commented saying – why am I talking about Nigerian laws? She says that she doesnt rate Nigerian laws, because it doesnt even cater for Marital Rape..but she is upholding Nigerian age of consent as her standard.Nigerian law doesnt cater for marital rape.. yet we know that marital rape is a thing and it’s wrong. We are very quick to refer to advanced countries to refer to their marital rape laws to buttress this position. But when we talk of age of consent you lock your head in the Nigerian space and repeatedly refer to a 16yr old as a child. It will interest you to know that it’s mostly the 3rd world countries of the world that have a high age of consent..Countries like Liberia, Burundi, Djibouti, Iraq, Haiti, and ofcourse your country Nigeria have their age of consent placed at 18yrs.It would also interest you to know that the Nigerian age of consent varies amongst states of the federation as not all states have domesticated the Child’s Rights Act and some of the states in domesticating the act reduced the age of consent..I’m saying this to say this – When I say that at age 16 in 200 level (ie 1998) at the university I did not consider myself to be a child..I perfectly understand what it is I’m saying to you.At 16 in 200Level I had coursemates who were above 30. I shouldn’t be able to date my coursemates too, because you are sensitive to grooming. Furthermore, you should know that the Child’s Rights Act was not domesticated in Delta state until 2009 and in Lagos state until 2007…So as at 200Level 98/99 in Delta state where I schooled and in Lagos state where I lived, I was an adult according to the prevailing laws of my state as it concerns consent. You see why you shouldn’t just take a look at a person and say to them you were a child in …… year, without understanding your laws. Now, take a look at the screenshot and tell me who Nigeria age of consent epp at 18..How many 16yr olds in Nigeria today, aren’t already taking alcohol and engaging in sexual behaviour..The age of consent in Nigeria is 18yrs courtesy the CRA. but we have 6yr old house maids and 8yr olds are on the streets & express ways..selling pure water, groundnut, oranges and bananas and you will stop your car and buy from them.Who are we deceiving….??In my opinion Nigerian law needs to review its age of consent to reflect its reality… The post Nigerian lady who met her ex at the age of 16 shares screenshot of age of consent in developed countries after followers said she was underage at that time appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
