As Indonesia records its first community transmissions of Omicron, official responses to any discovery of the variant have been carried out with much zeal, to say the least. That includes a case in Bali, in which nearly a dozen hotel staff were tested and placed in isolation after they were believed to come into direct contact with two Omicron patients.

According to officials, two tourists from Surabaya — with no known recent international travel history — traveled by land (and ferry) to Bali and stayed at a hotel in Nusa Dua from Dec. 20-25. They tested positive for COVID-19 and the Omicron variant upon their return to the East Java capital.

The Bali COVID-19 Task Force moved quickly to perform PCR tests and put 11 hotel staff who came in direct contact with the Surabaya patients into isolation for five days. A Russian guest at the hotel who interacted with the staff was also tested.

“The swab test results of all those who came in close contact with the Surabaya Omicron patients are negative,” Bali COVID-19 Task Force Secretary I Made Rentin said this morning.

All of the employees will be subject to another round of PCR tests as they leave quarantine.

As of Monday, Indonesia has officially recorded 152 Omicron cases, the majority of which are imported cases. None of the known Omicron patients exhibited any severe symptoms.
