It was another good day for Nigerian representatives at the Powerlifting competition at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Folashade Oluwafemiayo won Team Nigeria their third gold medal at the games. Folashade won the medal by setting a world record.
The Gold medalist surpassed her previous world record of 150.5kg to win the women’s -86kg with a lift of 152kg. She made her intentions known after her first lift of 147kg, shattering the Paralympic record of 135kg. Her subsequent 3 attempts saw her lift (148kg, 151kg, and 152kg). China’s Feifei Zheng won the silver medal by lifting 139kg.
Folashade won silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where she broke the world record. She missed out on the Rio 2016 games and now she is back in Tokyo to win Gold.
She now joins Latifat Tijani and Bose Omolayo on the list of Nigerians who have won the gold medals at the Tokyo games. Olaitan Ibrahim and Lucy Ejike have their names on the list of bronze medalists. Team Nigeria currently has three gold medals and two bronze medals, all from powerlifting.
