The medal-winning athletes from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were at Malacañang Palace last night to receive their state honors and incentives from the government—and it seems that they had a good time before the formal ceremony.
The Philippine Sports Commission released photos of the champions from the Philippine Olympic Team as they waited for the ceremony, showing a happy reunion among weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial.
As the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist, Diaz received the Presidential Medal of Merit, along with a housing unit and cash prizes totaling Php18 million.
Silver medalists Paalam and Petecio also received housing units each, and cash prizes totaling P7 million. As a bronze medalist, Marcial was awarded P3 million in total and a housing unit.
Boxer Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco was also awarded for his silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, also then a first for the Philippines, receiving Php500,000.
