Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina has said President Muhammad Buhari did not sack, but replaced ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mohammed Nanono and his Power counterpart, Saleh Mamman, saying national service is to God and humanity.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV on Sunrise Daily yesterday, Adesina said contrary to media and public views, the president only called to thank the replaced ministers for their services but never sacked them.
He noted that the president reviewed the performance index of the cabinet members since their appointment in August 2019 to assess the legacy contributions in their various responsibilities, to chart the way forward in the next 20 months left for this administration.
“The president never said their performances were weak but said he had called them personally to thank them for their services to the country and needed to move on to replace them.
“The president must have had reasons for dropping the two ministers but he never said their performances were weak,” he emphasised.
Asked whether the reliefs of the offices followed public opinion, the presidential aide stressed that, “Ministers are being appointed and not elected and the president appointed them to deliver services and can replace them as appointees.”
Reacting to the speech by Mr. President over the development, he said it is meant to reinvigorate grey areas, which will better the lives of citizens of the country, adding that no one can judge better than the master who has employed individuals to serve.
Adesina further pointed out that the government on the appointment of its ministers in 2019, addressed the cabinet on the salient nine agendas of this administration which include; the fight against corruption, security, food sufficiency, power supply, petroleum, strengthening the economy, amongst others to enable them carry out their tasks effectively.
With emphasis on the power sector, Adesina informed that the president is not ignorant of the challenges that Nigerians are currently facing as a result of poor supply of electricity, explaining that there is a chat that shows “the daily distribution of power supply across the country in the presidency.”
Commenting on the need for the reshufflements in the cabinet, the SA projected that all appointees are versatile individuals, who can serve in various capacities, noting that no government in the world can completely cater for the entire needs of its citizens but can only perform the essential duties needed at every dispensation.
He reassured Nigerians of President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment towards the yearnings of the current challenges, saying that the president is resolute on tackling all issues headlong to secure the future of the country.
Though, both ministers were relieved of their portfolios on Wednesday, September 1, the SA did not specify the reason for the sudden decision by the president, as the Agriculture Minister, Nanono was immediately replaced with Mohammed Mahmud Abubakar from Ministry of Environment while Abubakar Aliyu, of Ministry of State for Works and Housing, will resume as the new Minister of Power.
