“This is the time that statesmen and sincere leaders usually rise up to be counted. We are taken aback that students, lecturers are being attacked or killed in UNIJOS but there is yet any condemnation from the presidency, Nigerian Governors Forum, top religious leaders, and statesmen, including those who are nurturing the ambition of presenting themselves to be elected as president of Nigeria”

Since last week, development in Plateau State has been heart-wrenching indeed. We see the elevation of abominations within the human realm. After the ungodly and gruesome murdering of persons said to be religious travelers days ago, what is obviously reprisal attacks are being carried out on university students, staff and people going to worship places. Many people are being killed in the city of Jos and the environs and students of the University of Jos, according to reports, appear to be the worst hit in what is now widely known as reprisal attacks. For example, there are some viral videos showing gory images of students or persons on their way to worship places on Sunday being dragged out of vehicles and clubbed to death in cold blood.

Students and students’ bodies have been raising alarms on safety concerns. State governments have been reacting to this ugly development by sending vehicles to move students of their respective state origins back home from UNIJOS and Plateau State. For instance, Benue and Adamawa States have safely brought their students back home with a large number of security escorts. Also, the University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in a statement by the chairman of ASUU in the university, Lazarus Maigoro, has condemned attacks and killing of students, as well as members of staff of the university.

In his word, “We have suffered untold damages in relation to loss of lives and property, in addition to the regular suspension of academic activities each time there is a security breach in Jos and as a union, we have tried to understand how the university community is always at the receiving end of each crisis in Jos. “Inspite all the provocations, we have continued to offer community service to all, irrespective of religion, culture and tribe; the university administration has over the years made overtures to host communities in terms of undergraduate admissions and staff employment, yet our students and staff are killed at the slightest provocation, however far the epicentre of the crisis from the institution”, he stated.

We condemn in totality any form of killing and acts of dehumanization strategically going on in Jos, Plateau and other States and call on security personnel to take appropriate responsibility accordingly. If nothing is done, the ripple effect may spurn out something worse. The government should act now to stop multiple reprisal attacks by persons or groups whose students are being killed for no reason at all in Jos. The time to act is now.
