The member representing Langtang North/Langtang South Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Hon. Beni Lar on Monday flagged off empowerment programs for women and youths in her constituency.
She said the constituency, which is the only one in Northern Nigeria that has produced a female representative for three consecutive times, deserves the best of her.
She stated this during the flag-off ceremony held in Mabudi Langtang South, Plateau State.
“This is the only constituency in the whole of Northern Nigeria that has produced a woman for the third time into the National Assembly. I never knew I would be representing Langtang North and South in the House of Representatives for the third time.
“This constituency deserves the best, I count it as a privilege, my success in this office is your success and that is why I have to listen to the voice of my people. I have been elected into the National Assembly to be a voice for the people of this Constituency.”
According to her, as a legislator who is familiar with her duty for almost 15 years in the National Assembly, the voice of her constituency has been heard very clearly over time with calls for various interventions.
Lar promised that she will continue to push in the Green Chamber towards ensuring that the Langtang North and South constituency function as expected.
She said the journey started in 2007 where she was first elected into the National Assembly where she served as the Chairperson of House Committee on Women Affairs to ensure that the issue of gender was brought to the front burner of national discussion.
“It has been an interesting journey from 2007 when I was elected by the good people of Langtang North and South, and I was made the Chairperson House Committee on Women Affairs. The issue of women through the gender memoranda was brought forward, and I led 40,000 women to the then Justice Uweh Committee to seek and lobby for more than 35% gender affirmative action for women.”
“We are still lobbying and by the grace of God the gender opportunity bill will soon be passed. And through the constitutional amendment that we are hoping to make, women will have 100 seats minimal in the Constitution added to the 350 already in the Constitution, and that will bring about stronger involvement for women.”
She added, “In a democracy, every voice must be heard, and that is why different groups are represented here today. We have the traditional Council, we have the elders, we have the road transport Union been represented, Cultural Association, physically challenged persons too been represented market women amongst others.”
She said the event is for her to listen to the concerns of her constituents, even with the efforts so far made in influencing so many employments to her constituents.
“I am here today to listen to you people, what are the issues that are disturbing you people in this constituency. I know that a lot of youths have been employed, and we will continue to do so,” she assured them.
The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Hon. Joshua Ubandoma Laven, said the constituents are proud of her landmark achievements for the people of Langtang North and South.
He pointed out that the Lawmaker has been keeping in touch with the constituency anytime opportunity comes her way to brief them on her stewardship while in the National Assembly.
“This is the third time she is organizing a constituency briefing, we had the last one just before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Chairman recalled that “Last year by this time you shared so many fertilizers to our farmers aside the distribution of rice as palliatives to your constituents, and you cap it all with a constituent briefing.
“Your achievements are very visible for everyone to see, feel and touch, in terms of human capital development, you have given your all by ensuring that a lot of our youths who are today in Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals, the military and Paramilitary are products of your personal sacrifices. You raised so many young men whom some of us are part of your army; I must commend you for always remembering your people,” Laven stated.
