Manchester United may have paid off Cristiano Ronaldo’s fee before he makes his debut this weekend thanks to record-breaking shirt sales.

According to The Mirror, United could be about to pay off their investment in Ronaldo before he’s even kicked a ball.

The 36-year-old has returned to Old Trafford, 12 years after he left for Real Madrid.

United had to pay Juventus just shy of £20m to bring back to the Portuguese striker, who will again wear the No 7 shirt.

There has been a huge demand for Ronaldo shirts and they could yet pay off his transfer fee before his debut against Newcastle next weekend.

In the first 12 hours of his squad number being announced, Ronaldo No 7 shirts bought in £32.5m in sales across its various platforms, according to website lovethesales.com

Within hours of the shirt going on sale United enjoyed the biggest day of online sales ever on a single sports merchandise site outside of North America.

In the first hour alone on United’s official website the club topped their best ever 24 hours of sales.

The club will pocket 10 per cent of that figure due to how kit sponsorship deals work out.

The Red Devils were able to negotiate Ronaldo’s Juventus fee in £2.5m instalments, meaning they’ve already raised the annual sum they owe the Italian side.

If shirt sales continue at their current rate the Premier League giants will have paid for the striker before he even kicks a ball at Old Trafford.
